Alfa Romeo Alfasud (1972-1983)

In the late sixties of the twentieth century the Italian government has taken extensive measures to redress the disparities between rich, industrialized North and the poor south. One of the state-owned companies, which began construction of its plants in the south, was the Alfa Romeo in Milan. The new factory was established in the town of Pomigliano d'Arco near Naples. The first car that was manufactured, was the Alfa of the south, that is, the Alfasud.

This vehicle was first presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1971, but sales came in the summer of next season. Initially presented two versions of the new model 2 - and 4-door. Alfasud was the chief engineer of Austrian engineer Rudolf Hruschka, but about the body line took care of famous Italian stylist Giorgio Giugiaro.

Alfasud was the first Alfa Romeo model with front-wheel drive. As the source drive the 4-cylinder engine with push-pull arrangement of cylinders, the so-called boxer. The new, compact cars assembled unit with a capacity of 1186, 1351 and 1490 ccm.

The strongest in the whole grid, 105-horse unit was put into a sports car Alfasud 1.5 ti Quadrifoglio Verde (green four-leaf clover). It was a symbol of all high performance vehicles from Alfa Romeo, Targa Florio race in 1923 won by Ugo Sivocciego RL model.

Although the Alfasud was conceived mainly as a compact family car, like any Alfa Romeo has kept the nature of sports. Auto with the smallest engine rozpędzało to 100 km / h in 13.6 s. For those times it was a very good result. Unfortunately, the drive unit lacked flexibility. Much better fought a sports version of Sprint.

In the second half of the 70s vehicles with 130 hp made by Milan's sports department Autodelta participated in numerous World Cup competitions (Alfasud Trofeo), played in Italy, France, Austria and Germany. One of the drivers who gained their first successes there, is well known to us from later competing in Formula 1, Austrian Gerhard Berger.

Overall in the years 1972-1983 produced 1 028 268 Alfasud all models. They were manufactured in Italy, not only in native plants in Pomigliano d'Arco. In the early eighties, it is also assembled in Malaysia and South Africa. In the first case it was the same model as the one for the Italian market. In southern Africa, produced a special version of Grand Theft Auto Export - in the 5-door body was inserted 1.5-liter engine with 105 hp coming from a sports Quadrifoglio Verde.
